Applications, Licences and Permits

The Municipality of West Perth does not require a Municipal Business Licence for retail, home, or other businesses. Only refreshment vehicles and businesses using Municipal property (e.g., sidewalk patios or merchandise displays) require a licence. For required documentation or questions, please contact the relevant department head.

Event Tent Permit

When is a building permit required for a tent?

  • If the tent is on public property
  • If the area of the tent is greater than 60 meters squared (645 square feet).
  • Tents greater than 225 meters squared (2,421 feet square) must have the tent framing and anchorage system designed, and the installation inspected, by a professional engineer
  • All tent fabric must comply with CAN/ULC-S109 or NFPA 701 flammability standards.

*If the event is on public property a Fire Plan approved by the West Perth Fire Department is also required.

Municipality of West Perth's Building Department uses Cloudpermit - an online system to apply for and track building permits. This initiative aims to streamline the permit process and reduce our carbon footprint. This is an application for a one-time event or an annual licence that is valid until December 31. Your application must include:

To operate at special events, you must receive written permission from special event organizers to sell within their event.

Sign Permit

The Building Department is responsible for issuing sign permits regulating permanent and portable signs and other advertising devices, and the posting of notices on buildings or in vacant lots and awnings or marquees which project over a street. 

Applications will be checked for compliance with the Sign By-law and applicants will be advised if any modifications are required to plans in order for the project to comply. A sign permit will be issued when all necessary approvals have been obtained, and all fees have been paid.

Application:

  • a completed application
  • the applicable application fees
  • a complete set of drawings and specifications detailing the construction of the sign and support structure. Where applicable, this will include drawings stamped by a registered professional engineer.
  • a plan indicating the lot dimensions, frontage and setback requirements and proposed location of the sign on-site,
  • all written approvals (e.g., County of Perth, Ministry of Transportation), as required. (i.e., signs within 400m and visible to a Provincial highway require a ministry permit.

 


Special Occasion Permit

A permit from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario is required any time alcohol is offered for sale or served anywhere other than in a licensed establishment or private place. In order to receive a Special Occasion Permit (SOP) for liquor sales from the AGCO for a public event held in West Perth, you must receive a letter of "municipal significance."  

A Public Event SOP can be issued: 
  • To a charitable organization under the Income Tax Act (Canada);
  • To Not-for-Profit organizations/associations organized to promote charitable, educational, religious or community objects.
  • For an event of provincial, national or international significance; or
  • For an event of “municipal significance” where a Municipal Council has passed a resolution, or a letter has been issued from the municipal clerk or designated authority which designates the event to be of municipal significance.
SOP Letter of Municipal Significance Requirements:
  • Proof of insurance in the amount of $5,000,000.00 
  • Include the Municipality as an additional insured party and indemnify the Municipality of all and any associated risks resulting from the public event
