Burn Permit

General Provisions for Open Air Burns

1. Burning time is limited between 8:00am and 9:00pm
2. Fire cannot exceed 1.8m x 1.8m in size
3. Burning must be conducted at least 30 metres from any structure, roadway or woodlot
4. Burn must take place at the address listed burn permit
5. Fire must be extinguished before leaving the site
6. Not permitted on rainy, windy, foggy or smog alert days
7. No imported materials can be imported to the property for the purpose of burning
8. Only dry brush and clean agricultural waste can be burned as per the Environmental Act
9. Smoke from fire cannot negatively affect neighbours - Complaints may terminate permit
10. Any contraventions to the Open Air Burning By-law will terminate permit
11. Approval must be obtained no later than 30 minutes prior to the start of the burn

The Open Air Burning By-law contains all the information on what is permitted to burn, when you can burn, and fines for non-compliance.

The West Perth Fire Department will issue a burn ban when there is very dry weather or poor air quality in the community. Burn ban notices will appear on our website and social media. The notice will let you know which types of burning are banned. These burn bans are for your safety and we ask that you follow them.

For any complaints concerning open burning, smoke or smell of smoke, call the West Perth Fire Department from Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. For after hours, weekends and holidays please dial 911.

If the West Perth Fire Department attends to a complaint and the fire does not meet the guidelines set out in our Municipal By-Law, or if the Municipality has not been notified of a planned burn, they will be asked to extinguish the fire.
