The Hugh Edighoffer Board Room
In 2023, Mayor Walter McKenzie made the motion to council to name the Boardroom in the new Municipal Office after the acclaimed Hugh Edighoffer. This prestgious designation honours Hugh's service to our community and province.
History of Hugh
Hugh Edighoffer, born in 1928, was a lifelong resident of Mitchell. He was a small businessman, Town Councillor, Mayor, Member of Provincial Parliament, and Speaker of the Ontario Legislature.
Hugh worked as a retail merchant in the family clothing business that operated for 75 years in Mitchell. He served on Mitchell Town Council from 1958 to 1961 including 2 years as mayor.
In 1967, Hugh ran successfully to represent Perth County in the Ontario Legislative Assembly. Hugh served as Deputy Speaker from 1977 – 1981 and then as Speaker of the Legislature in 1985. He held that position until his retirement in 1990. He served as MPP for 23 years.
Hugh and his wife Nancy lived out their retirement in Mitchell contributing to housing developments and the community.
The Town of Mitchell, now West Perth, is thankful for Hugh’s exemplary public service and dedication to the Town of Mitchell, the County of Perth, and the Province of Ontario.
