Police Services in West Perth are provided through a contract with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), under Section 10 of the Police Services Act.

As part of the requirements under the legislation, West Perth has a Police Services Board consisting of five members: two representatives from West Perth Council (the Mayor or designate, and another member of Council), one Municipal Appointee and two Provincial Appointees.

Chair:

  June Demerling (Municipal Appointee)

Board Members:

Walter McKenzie (West Perth Mayor)
Larry Wight (West Perth Councillor)
Nancy Dearing (Provincial Appointee)
Scott Rocher (Provincial Appointee)

The primary functions of the West Perth Police Services Board are as follows:

a) Participating in the selection of the Detachment Commander of the detachment assigned to the Municipality;

b) Generally determining objectives and priorities for Police Services, after consultation with the Detachment Commander or designate.  However, the Police Services Board may not direct the ‘day to day’ activities of the Police Service or their members;

c) Establishing, after consultation with the Detachment Commander or designate, any local policies with respect to Police Services. However, the Police Services Board shall not establish any policy that conflicts with provincial policy with respect to Police Services;

d)  Monitoring the performance of the Detachment Commander;

e) Receiving regular reports from the Detachment Commander or designate on disclosures and decision made under Section 49 of the Police Services Act (Secondary Activities); and,

f)  Reviewing the Detachment Commander’s administration of the complaints system under Part V of the Police Services Act and receive regular reports from the Detachment Commander, or his or her designate, on his or her administration of the complaints system.

Along with these legislated duties, the Police Services Board is considered a bridge between the West Perth Community, and the Police Service. The Police Services Board takes an active role in hearing community concerns and addressing them with the Detachment Commander or designate, for action.
