Business Retention + Expansion - Volunteers Required

Between February and July of 2008 The County of Perth is conducting the second phase of a Business Retention and Expansion Project (BR+E). BR+E is a community-based economic development strategy with a focus on “taking care of, nurturing and supporting” businesses already existing in the community. A structured business survey is utilized as a means of beginning a dialogue with local businesses with the intent of identifying issues, concerns and potential opportunities and taking action where appropriate.

BR+E works to improve the competitiveness of local businesses by identifying and addressing their needs and concerns and building on business development opportunities. This is crucial to the sustained viability of communities since businesses that stay competitive are more likely to remain and expand in the community.

Home Energy $avings, an un-biased home evaluation, a incentive grant from Natural Resources Canada and Cleaner Air!

The Perth-Huron Residential Energy Efficiency Project or REEP for short, is the local office for unbiased advice on energy savings to homeowners. As part of the Elora Centre for Environmental Excellence, we offer unbiased expert advice to homeowners on energy savings.

An EnerGuide Evaluation consists of two tests on your home. The first to rate the structures overall energy efficiency and the second to measure the improvements made through energy upgrades. Your home will be place on the national scale between 0 and 100 (with 100 being the highest). You will be given a list of recommendation which you can follow to increase your home’s energy efficiency. Natural Resources Canada gives you 18 months to complete as many or as few of the recommendations as you choose. Your homes potential improvement will be discovered with your first evaluation.

In October 2003, Natural Resources Canada implemented a grant which re-imburses money to homeowners based on their improvement rating. This grant is an extra incentive to homeowners who will already being enjoying the benefits of an energy efficient lifestyle and saving money. Grants have recently been increased and range from $215 to $4580, depending on the improvement achieved. The national average for homeowner grants is aprox. $719. per household. Usually the amount of the grant is comparable to the yearly savings in energy costs a homeowner can expect. Within the 18 month window, when you are satisfied with your renovations, you call back for a follow up evaluation. Your home will be re-measured and your improvement will be paid back on a point by point basis. Your energy evaluator will help you fill out the granting forms for you and file them on your behalf.

The cost for an Energuide is $350, but Natural Resources Canada pays the first $175 of that right off the top, leaving the cost to homeowner at $150 for the first test and $25 for the follow up evaluation.

Homeowners wishing more information or those who would like to book their EnerGuide Home evaluation, can contact Lynda Bausinger, Perth-Huron Project Manager at: toll free: at 1-888-380-7337 . Homeowners and landlords of row housing units (non-stacked) can also call or email: huron.perth@thereep.ca or visit the website and book on-line at www.thereep.ca
